Summary: Pack it up, move it on, Rawhide! 2009-01-08
Comment: Here's the thing with this backpack: it's probably got more room than your closet. Pockets upon pockets upon pockets, incredibly comfortable straps to sling over your shoulder, and not bad looking to boot.

Let's go over the good features not detailed too heavily in the description:

* It has not one, but two drink mesh pockets, one on each side.
* A well-ventilated back to prevent excessive moisture buildup from hot trekking
* Deep, well-separated pockets in the padded computer storage sleeve (in the biggest section furthest to the back), the secondary pocket with two durable separators (in the middle) and the utility pocket (with minimal material for quite a few pens/pencils/thin tools in various sized pockets-- 9 in all, three with velcro, and a keyring)
* Strong, solid zipper pull metals with raised grooves on each piece
* Two pockets in front of the drink sleeves that extend to the bottom of the bag
* Carabiner loop-sewn into the top of the bag-- I personally don't know what you need a carabiner for that high up, but there you go!
* Solid, durable handle at the top for quick pick-up-and-go
* Side straps allow tightening of bag for smaller laptops to minimize slack
* Headphone jack plug and cord runs through unexposed to left side strap near upper left arm to allow user's own headphones to plug in for iPod/other MP3 player usage in media pocket-- and no loss in sound quality
* Inward-stitching on non-zippered edges, keeping edges folded inward rather than outward, reducing drag, minimizing debris collection and wear-and-tear

Minuses? Not much to speak of really, but...

* Drink sleeves not terribly high for larger water bottles (12 oz. or less fit comfortably)-- can be overcome by using aforementioned tightening straps to act as a secondary restraint for larger bottles.

* Cell phone pouch, although stretchable and with a large cover is only good for thinner, narrow-bodied phones. Your iPhone or average PDA will have to go somewhere else. A velcro tightening strap on a larger pouch could have benefitted greatly here for more popular wide-body data phones.

* The "Media pocket" (aka iPod pocket) is a snug fit inside for iPhones and iTouches, but not impossible to get in or out without a case. However, keep in mind that you better have a playlist you're comfortable with listening to-- otherwise you're going to be opening the bag, pulling whatever device you've got, do your business with it, putting it back, and closing the bag quite often, because the pouch is opaque to boot.

* On a cosmetic note, the blue isn't as vibrant as the picture illustrates-- if you rate that a 10 on brightness, it's really more of a 7; but regardless, the color scheme and design is still eye-catching without being gaudy.

Some would argue that a lack of hard, molded bottoms on a travel pack such as this for keeping bag wear and cleanliness to a minimum would be a minus, but it's really a matter of opinion-- I might have liked them as well, but at the same time it also lowers the overall lifetime shock from your computer hitting it every time you set it down. You're more inclined to be a little more careful bringing it to a rest without them.

Swissgear knows how to make a solid computer backpack, and if you get this at a price that's less than half of the steep $150 retail price, you're getting a real bargain (this reviewer picked it up at $35). It's now my perfect carry-on for plane travel-- and as long as you don't stuff it to the gills, it will most definitely fit under the seat in front of you rather than needing to stash it in the overhead. I can fit my 8x11 sketchpad, both portable gaming systems, 13-inch laptop, pencil case, two drinks and large hardcover book inside and still have tons of room to spare.

Buy with confidence: a reliable investment to protect your gear for daily use and domestic travel.

Comment: This product is great.Has plenty of space for things. The compartment for your laptop is very well padded. It has a spot in the bag where your mp3 player plugs into and the adapter to it is on the shoulder strap. Great product
